Indian River

Indian River is located between Mullett Lake and Burt Lake and plays host to the Inland Waterway; stretching 40 miles and offering boaters a connection from several inland lakes into Lake Huron. The waterway begins with Crooked Lake in Conway, six miles north of Petoskey and continues through the Crooked River, Burt Lake, Indian River, Mullett Lake and the Cheboygan River finally emptying out into Lake Huron at Cheboygan.

The waterway is navigable by power boats up to approximately 30 feet in length. Bridges and water depth affects sailboats in the river, but Burt and Mullett Lakes are excellent for sailing. Burt and Mullett Lakes are the fourth and fifth largest inland lakes in Michigan and Burt Lake covers an area of approximately 26 square miles with a maximum depth of approximately 73 feet.

The area offers motor sport trails for ATVs and snowmobiles, hiking and bicycling, paddle sport opportunities and cross-country ski trails. Several golf courses provide a challenge to participants of all skill levels. Just a short drive north, the Mackinac Bridge connects the Lower Peninsula to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and overlooks famous Mackinac Island, reachable by ferry from either side of the bridge.
