Charlevoix

Charlevoix is a dynamic destination, featuring a bounty of beaches and parks, plenty of dining and shopping opportunities and unique historical and architectural attractions all surrounded by the natural beauty of Lake Charlevoix, Round Lake and Lake Michigan.

The county, the city and the third largest inland lake in Michigan are all named after Father Pierre Charlevoix, a French Jesuit missionary and a spy for the French government. Although the region has changed since Father Charlevoix passed through in 1721, residents and visitors still refer to the area by its unofficial title of “Charlevoix the Beautiful.”

In 2012, online USA Today readers voted Lake Charlevoix the “Second Best Lake in America” in a poll for the publication’s travel section. With the city of Charlevoix situated between Lake Charlevoix, Round Lake and Lake Michigan, you can find an ideal location for all kinds of water activities including beachcombing, boating, waterskiing and swimming.

Charlevoix’s downtown marina and East Park are always bustling with activity and include a state-of the-art performance pavilion, home to the Charlevoix Concert Series, plaza-style seating overlooking the harbor, public restrooms, and complimentary wifi. Also located in the plaza near the Harbormaster’s building is an interactive children’s fountain and trout habitat that serves as a complete ecosystem supporting a healthy population of more than 50 fish.

Across the street from the marina, shopping opportunities abound. From art galleries and antiques shops to clothing stores and candy shops, Charlevoix’s downtown offers something for every kind of shopper as well as many dining options, from fun to fancy. Many restaurants offer take-out meals to enjoy in the park, on your boat, or at one of the many nearby beaches.

History buffs and architects won’t want to miss the Earl Young Home Tour. Once a year the Charlevoix Historical Society presents a rare opportunity to tour the interiors of eight of his unique stone-built homes and businesses that resemble little mushrooms. Each one is charmingly beautiful and places you in a virtual fairytale.

With such variety set amongst three stunning lakes, Charlevoix is a unique place to call home.

“

“Just a few miles from downtown Charlevoix, is Castle Farms, a Renaissance castle with magnificent stone towers, fragrant gardens and cobblestone courtyards. Originally built in 1918 by Albert Loeb, acting President of Sears, Roebuck, and Company, the castle was designed by architect Arthur Heun based on the ancient stone barns and Renaissance castles found in Normandy, France.

Since its original construction, the property under different ownership, hosted large concerts and almost faced total destruction. However, in 2001, the property was purchased by Linda Mueller with the vision of restoring the Castle and preserving it for future generations.”
